One of the most important keys that can enable the poor to break the cycle of poverty and build wealth is a factor known as economic connectedness.

In simple terms, economic connectedness connotes how people from different socio-economic backgrounds are able to interact with one another. The underlying principle is that the more the poor are able to interact with rich people, the more they are likely to become financially successful.

By the same token, the more the poor are segregated from the rich, the less likely they are to become rich. When the poor constantly interact only with other poor people like themselves for instance in marriage, at work or in their social circle, the more difficult it is for them to experience upward social mobility.

There are different ways the poor can interact closely with the rich to aid social mobility. Examples include:
1. Attending the same school with the rich

When children from poor families attend the same schools with children from rich families, they will not only get good education, they will also form life-long relationships with children from the rich families that can open doors for them later in life.

2. Belonging to the same community
When the poor and children from poor backgrounds belong to the same community, with the rich, live in the same neighbourhood, or attend the same places of worship, for example a church, mosque, or synagogue, the more likely they are to gain access to opportunities they can leverage for their financial fortune. These opportunities include information and recommendations for securing admission into lucrative courses, high income job opportunities, launching successful businesses, and access to business funding among others.
3. Offering value to the rich

When the poor provide value to the rich for instance by doing an excellent job, passing the test of loyalty, or showing integrity, the more likely the rich will offer them opportunities to compensate them and open up their networks to them.
